With A Grateful Heart

Thanks to your generous givings and intercessory prayers in this difficult year of 2020, we were able to:

> Train Christian leaders from 20+ different Asian countries mostly by online due to pandemic.

> Personally mentor a small group of Christian leaders and their families from Vietnam and Philippines. They’ve graduated from 3 years of their ministry training at IGSL and are now placed in their respective ministry fields.

> Empower and strengthen the online teaching ministry to help equip Christian leaders worldwide through EAPTC’s internet platform.

> Finish the manuscript of my second book [Disciples of the Nations]. It’ll be out in the bookstores at the beginning of 2021 through the Wipf and Stock Publishers.

> Witness our son, Timothy, to transfer to another college and to mature toward his call to play soccer for God’s glory.

Eunice and I, with our co-workers at EAPTC in general, would like to thank you for your companionship in this ministry. You’re a valuable co-witness of what God is doing for this time and age, even in the midst of a global pandemic. We’re so blessed and privileged to journey with you in this call toward the completion of the Great Commission. May the Lord keep you safe and healthy in the continued Covid challenges. Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Paul Lee (& Eunice)

[The Lees Update] Newsletter (October 2020)

Dear Friend,

Hard to believe, it’s now over 6 months since the Philippines has declared the community lockdown! What was once inconvenient and frustrating has now become a new ‘norm.’ Regulated moves, curfews, masks, face shields, sanitizers, physical distancing, and virtual communication landed to be a part of the lifestyle here. With no capacity to develop its own vaccine, the Filipino government seems to rely on foreign assistance and just keep prolonging the community quarantine. Amid a seemingly hopeless situation, Christ and his promise have been our ultimate hope. In such a vulnerable time as this, we draw our daily energy from Philippians 3:14 to push through another day and navigate ourselves on the right track toward the vision: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Besides, faithful prayers and supports of mission partners like you motivate us even today to keep us on the field. The work has to go on.

Most of our teaching and mentoring ministries shifted into an online format. Though the process involved many painful and challenging changes, Eunice and I managed to learn and to adapt to this unprecedented technology available for God’s mission. Many preaching and teaching sessions have been locally recorded and remotely shared. Students are constantly reached online while studying from different parts of Asia and the world regions. Virtual mentoring sessions are intensified. I’m more frequently on either Zoom meeting or WhatsApp video call to communicate and encourage our disciples and coworkers serving in 15 nations of Africa and Asia. I often found myself engaged in virtual conferences lately held by notable missiological and academic organizations to learn and navigate the future of mission. I must admit, the work has become even more internationalized! More writings of a book and articles are getting done in this pandemic season. Some of our churches in Africa have been restricted with limited worship attendance and assemblies. In turn, a number of pastors turned to the radio preaching ministry. This has facilitated the message of the gospel to spread even further beyond their local influences. What the devil meant for evil through COVID-19, God has turned it around to be blessings for the nations.

Since March, the IGSL campus has been physically closed to cope up with the government’s order of national lockdown. This decision forced to send all students temporarily back to their countries. While most of them managed to return to their home countries by now, a few Vietnamese and Chinese students still remain in IGSL due to the stubborn refusal of those countries to open borders and receive even their own nationals. Please pray for Thanh’s family to be able to return soon to Vietnam to launch their ministry there since they’ve already graduated in May. Eunice and I have been providing Thanh’s family a pastoral care and personal mentoring for the last 3 years.

Please keep us in your prayers as we do the same for you. The Lord keep you safe and healthy in the coming holiday season. Let us wrap up 2020 in God’s persevering grace in this turbulent time!

Yours together,
Dr. Paul Lee (& Eunice)

[The Lees Update] Newsletter (June 2020)

Dear Friend,

Shalom to you from the Philippines in this troubled season! With over 100 days long quarantine yet still with no control over the infectious curve, the Philippines is hit hard by COVID-19 pandemic. Some people seem to have given up hope and even decided to ignore the perilous reality due to immediate survival needs. Some people roam around on roads just to find a ride to their work since the government banned all public transportations for social distancing precaution. To this end, imprudent uses of private vehicles jammed the road traffic again on Manila streets. Many Filipinos are uncertain about the future of the country, and many Christians about the future of churches here and around the world alike. Just for a reminder, this is not the first time the world faced an acute pandemic. Even in the 16th century when a deadly plague devastated Europe, many Christians and churches behaved in such complicated situations as contemporary salt and light of the society. Time and situation changed but the call and position of the Church remain the same.

Churches in the EAPTC network are exactly doing that in the heart of the Muslim-dominated coastal region of Tanzania. Thanks to the unprecedented online technology made available now to missionaries, Eunice and I have been regularly advising and mentoring the leaders serving our network of 15 countries. A team led by Cletus Tukai, our Swahili Africa regional director, has been vibrantly moving onward for the cause of Christ through Bible training and church planting mission. Backed by the mother church established in Kilimanjaro/Moshi area, EAPTC is strengthening daughter church plants in multiple locations of coastal Tanzania through its disciples. Though still new and small, our Vietnam mission is also moving strongly through small groups multiplication in the ‘T’ city. God is still alive and moving during this pandemic, and souls are coming to the Lord like never before. In the Philippines, owing to the social distancing policy, we’ve just celebrated the 2020 online graduation of IGSL students who Eunice and I have been teaching and mentoring. Kindly uplift 64 gospel workers in your prayers as they’re commissioned back to 12 countries of Asia and Africa, many of which are known as Creative Access Regions with some or severe restriction to open sharing of the gospel.

Many of our coworkers in Africa and Asia are suffering economically and socially. Hyper-corruption and social injustice are usually more rampant in these parts of the world during a crisis like this. Your prayers for them will be much appreciated. As 1 Corinthians 12:26 says, when one part suffers every part suffers with it in the body of Christ. Much thanks to your love gifts that Moses Aringo has recovered and is doing well in Malawi. Through it all, you and I, the body of Christ, are called to be the salt and light of the world even amid peril of pandemic. And Eunice and I thank you for being a part of what God is doing in this world through your sacrificial giving and prayer. Please take care in this challenging season.

Yours together in Christ,
Dr. Paul Lee (& Eunice)

[Church services during coronavirus pandemic: To hold, or not to hold] - Paul Sungro Lee

Dear Pastor,

It is my prayer everyday that God will keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy in this worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. As this contagion has affected many around the world, I thought you’d need some manual to help guide your church members accordingly in this challenging season. Please visit here for the manual. Check if you can apply some of the contents of this manual to your church. If anything is applicable to your own setting, please feel free to use them as it was freely distributed by the Humanitarian Disaster Institute. Otherwise, you will need to come up with your own wise logistics about how to deal with the situation in the church God has put under your care.

In the 16th century when a deadly plague hit Europe, Martin Luther, a protestant reformer, wrote a letter to his friend about how church should behave in such complicated situations. I believe Luther’s principle still rings true today. Reading through his letter might be helpful for us to act balanced at this critical juncture. He wrote:
“What else is the epidemic but a fire which instead of consuming wood and straw devours life and body? You ought to think this way: Very well, by God’s decree the enemy has sent us poison and deadly offal. Therefore I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine, and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance infect and pollute others, and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me, however, I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely … See, this is such a God-fearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not tempt God." (Luther, 1989)
Yes, this pandemic is a spiritual issue but also regards the physical dimension. I do not deem it healthy to hyper-spiritualize everything. Surely, we must reach out to those in need as much as we can but with necessary caution. May the Lord give you wisdom and love both as a godly leader of God’s Church and a good citizen of the community. Even if a pastor calls for a temporary closure of services or momentarily modifies into house church meetings in smaller units to honor social distancing policy, it is not a cowardly act. It may even be considered more courageous for a pastor to make a painful decision of temporary cease of Sunday assemblies despite knowing the expected drop of tithes and offerings. I pray for God to give each of you a gentle shepherding heart who looks after both the spiritual and physical welfare of church members.

In closing, I want to assure you that it is not the coronavirus, which will bring the world to an end. Our eternal Word of God apparently reminds us that only when the gospel of this kingdom is preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, then the end shall come (Matthew 24:14). Church is still the salt and light of the world even amid pandemic. Let us never forget who we are called to be in this challenging season.

With caring prayers,

Rev. Paul Lee (& Eunice)
International Director, EAPTC
